Creative-Curated Project, Assignment 2—Hybrid Traditions: From France to Arabia and Abu Dhabi Today
For the second assignment, please develop a creative project which involves an interpretative argument about a primary source from the Syllabus involving Arabia or France (this must be taken from the Song of Songs, the film and/or book, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, or the Maqamat on four perfumes, for example), drawing upon several secondary sources listed in the Syllabus, or optional sources such as Kafani (Aesthetics and Ritual in the UAE) or Jung (An Ethnography of Fragrance) in order to deepen and sustain your assessment of the source’s significance. The digital project can be a creative digital scent map of a section of Abu Dhabi or the UAE, a technological device or a patent proposal, a curated collection of photographs, a short film that you have made of ethnographic practices, or a written essay of 4-6 double-spaced pages (1000 – 1500 words not including the bibliography and footnotes), or, finally, something else that you would like to propose to me in advance.

The parameters of the essays are flexible in terms of topic choice, and they require engagement with more than one geographic sphere and/or time period. You will need to select two artworks/artists/themes from different time periods and two different geographic locations. You are required to draw connections, comparisons, and contradistinctions between the histories of the two or more locales, and you are encouraged to think thematically. The goal in this type of research is that it resists any compartmentalization of historical narrative, and allows you to better think globally and transnationally.
The essay should be ten pages (not including endnotes and bibliography) and must be typed in 12pt, double spaced, times new roman font. The title, your name, student ID, and year of study should appear on the cover of the assignment. Images must be referenced and included as an appendix to your essay, and any other kind of material you use should be cited in your bibliography. I will be looking for a clear thesis statement, relevant, logical and concise support for your thesis, writing style, proper documentation of sources, and the ability to stay within the word limit. Please use MLA or Chicago Manual of Style for your references.
